Truvo Cyber is a Canadian cybersecurity firm that implements ISO 27001 for SaaS, technology and infrastructure companies: gap assessment, ISMS build, risk assessment and Statement of Applicability, internal audit, and coordination of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits with an accredited certification body. In Canada, a first ISO 27001 certification costs roughly CAD $40,000 to $110,000 all-in for year one, and the consultant who builds your ISMS cannot be the body that certifies it. This guide sets out how to evaluate an ISO 27001 consultant in Canada and compares eight options, including us, on specialty, location, frameworks and engagement model.
Canadian buyers searching for an ISO 27001 consultant run into three kinds of firm in the results: implementation consultants, certification bodies, and large advisory firms that do some of both through separate teams. Each one plays a different role in the same project. Mixing them up is the most expensive mistake we see first-time ISO 27001 buyers make, because a certification body is barred from consulting on the system it certifies.
This page is for the technical leader who has a customer, a tender or a European deal asking for an ISO 27001 certificate and now needs to pick who builds the ISMS. The first half covers the criteria that predict whether an ISO 27001 engagement ends with a certificate on schedule. The second half compares the firms working in the Canadian market. We list ourselves first because leaving ourselves off would be odd, and we describe every other firm as accurately as public information allows.
If you are earlier in the decision, our ISO 27001 cost breakdown lists every line item with a source, and the ISO 27001 Readiness Scorecard gives you a benchmark against the standard before you scope a vendor.
How to evaluate an ISO 27001 consultant in Canada
The best predictor of a good ISO 27001 engagement is whether the consultant can name the certification audit date on the first call and work backwards from it. Price and logo count come second. The seven criteria below separate consultants who deliver a certificate from those who deliver a folder of templates.
1. Implementation consultant or certification body: know which one you are talking to
An ISO 27001 consultant builds your ISMS. An accredited certification body audits it and issues the certificate. ISO/IEC 17021-1, the standard every accredited certification body must follow, prohibits a certification body from offering management system consultancy to the client it certifies. Several firms that rank for "ISO 27001 consultant" in Canada are certification bodies. Prescient Security, for example, states on its impartiality page that it does not offer management system consultancy for any ISO standard.
Ask every firm on your shortlist one question: "Will you build our ISMS, or audit it?" The answer tells you which slot the firm fills. You need one of each.
Your ISO 27001 consultant and your certification body must be different firms
ISO/IEC 17021-1 bars an accredited certification body from consulting on the management system it certifies. Hire a consultant to build the ISMS and an accredited certification body to audit it.
2. Engagement model: Assess, Build, Operate, or all three
ISO 27001 work comes in four useful shapes. Assess is a gap assessment against the clauses and the 93 Annex A controls, ending in a scope statement and a roadmap. Build is implementation: risk assessment, Statement of Applicability, policies, controls and evidence. Operate keeps the ISMS running through the two surveillance audits in the three-year certificate cycle. ABO bundles all three under one fixed price.
ISO 27001 punishes the build-and-leave model more than SOC 2 does. Clause 9 requires internal audits, management reviews and measurement every year, and the surveillance auditor checks for them. A consultant who builds the ISMS and leaves hands you an annual obligation you may not have staff for.
3. Who runs the internal audit
Every ISO 27001 ISMS needs an internal audit before Stage 2, and the auditor must be independent of the work being audited. The consultant who built your controls cannot objectively audit them. Good consultants either bring a separate internal audit team or name a partner for it. See our guide to ISO 27001 internal audit providers if you want to source the internal audit separately.
4. Framework breadth beyond ISO 27001
Framework breadth matters as soon as a second framework is likely. Roughly 70% of ISO 27001 and SOC 2 controls overlap, so a company selling into the US and Europe can evidence one security program for both. ISO 42001 for AI features, ISO 27701 for privacy, and CPCSC for Canadian defence work all reuse the same ISMS foundation. A consultant who builds the program once and maps ISO 27001 onto an existing SOC 2 program can cut the timeline from 9 to 12 months down to 4 to 6.
SOC 2 holders reach ISO 27001 faster
Roughly 70% of SOC 2 and ISO 27001 controls overlap. With a mature SOC 2 program, ISO 27001 certification typically takes 4 to 6 months, compared with 9 to 12 months from scratch.
5. Infrastructure fit: cloud-native, on-prem or hybrid
ISO 27001 scope follows your real infrastructure, including data centres, colocation, office networks and Active Directory. A consultant who has only worked inside AWS consoles will struggle with Annex A controls on physical security, network segregation and equipment maintenance. If you run anything outside hyperscale cloud, ask how many ISO 27001 engagements the consultant has run on infrastructure that looks like yours.
6. Canadian presence and PIPEDA / Law 25 fluency
A Canadian ISO 27001 consultant earns the fee when the ISMS has to satisfy Canadian obligations as well as the standard. PIPEDA applies federally. Quebec Law 25 adds privacy impact assessments, breach reporting and penalties up to $25 million or 4% of worldwide turnover under the Private Sector Act. Federal and Quebec customers ask about data residency and French-language documentation. A Canadian consultant writes those requirements into the same ISMS from the start.
7. Pricing transparency and a fixed timeline
A consultant who knows how long ISO 27001 takes can quote it at a fixed price with a fixed calendar. Hourly ISO 27001 engagements tend to drift past the Stage 2 date. Ask for a written plan that names the internal audit date, the management review date and the Stage 1 and Stage 2 windows before you sign.
Frequently asked questions about ISO 27001 consulting in Canada
How much does an ISO 27001 consultant cost in Canada?
Plan for three line items. Consulting or readiness work runs roughly CAD $25,000 to $70,000 for a Canadian SMB, according to Toronto consultancy TrazTech's published ranges. The certification body fee for Stage 1 and Stage 2 runs roughly CAD $15,000 to $40,000. GRC platform licences are separate. Our ISO 27001 cost guide breaks down each item with sources.
We already have SOC 2 Type 2. Can we reuse that work for ISO 27001?
Yes. Most SOC 2 controls map to ISO 27001 Annex A, so the controls and much of the evidence carry over. The new work is the ISMS management system: scope statement, risk assessment, Statement of Applicability, internal audit and management review. Companies with a mature SOC 2 program typically reach ISO 27001 certification in 4 to 6 months, compared with 9 to 12 months from scratch.
Can my ISO 27001 consultant also certify us?
No. ISO/IEC 17021-1 requires certification bodies to stay independent of the systems they certify, so the firm that builds your ISMS cannot issue your certificate. Choose a consultant for implementation and an accredited certification body for the audit, and have the consultant coordinate the Stage 1 and Stage 2 schedule.
Top ISO 27001 consulting firms in Canada
The list below covers eight options with verifiable Canadian presence and a public ISO 27001 implementation offering, checked against each firm's own website in October 2026. We left out firms whose ISO 27001 consulting claims we could not verify, and we list certification bodies separately in the next section because they fill a different role. Several "top ISO 27001 consultant" articles online come from firms based outside Canada that list Canada among dozens of regions. We flag that where it applies.
1. Truvo Cyber (Toronto / Ottawa)
One-line positioning. Canadian ISO 27001 consultancy that builds a working security program first, then evidences ISO 27001 on top of it.
What we do well. We run fixed-price ISO 27001 engagements in the Assess, Build, Operate and ABO shapes, including an 8-week ISO 27001 Accelerator that takes a company from gap assessment to audit-ready with one dedicated consultant. We run ISO 27001 internal audits through a separate team from the one that built the ISMS, so the independence requirement is covered without a second vendor. The same program carries SOC 2, ISO 42001, CPCSC, PIPEDA and Law 25, and we operate whichever GRC platform the client already uses (Vanta, Drata, Secureframe, Scrut, Sprinto).
Best fit for. Companies where an ISO 27001 certificate is gating a deal, a tender or European expansion, companies that already hold SOC 2 and need ISO 27001 next, and operators with on-prem, colocation or hybrid infrastructure inside the ISMS scope.
Notable signals. Founded 2018, offices in Toronto and Ottawa, SOC 2 Type II attested ourselves. Public engagement experience includes Payments Canada, whose CISO Matt Charette has said Truvo "ensures we meet our stringent ISO 27001 and SWIFT compliance goals."
Caveats. We are deliberately small. If you need a large bench for a multi-country rollout, a Big 4 firm fits better. We are also not a certification body; we coordinate your audit with an accredited one.
Our ISO 27001 certification consulting page covers the full engagement.
2. Canadian Cyber (Toronto)
One-line positioning. Toronto-based GRC consultancy offering end-to-end ISO 27001 implementation alongside SOC 2 and vCISO services.
What they do well. Canadian Cyber's ISO 27001 service lists scoping and gap analysis, implementation support, internal audit and management review, and help selecting a third-party auditor. Framework coverage includes SOC 2, ISO 42001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018 and ISO 22301.
Best fit for. Canadian SMBs that want a Toronto-based generalist across ISO 27001 and SOC 2.
Notable signals. Office at Yonge Street in Toronto, ISO 27001 implementation and internal audit listed as distinct services.
Caveats. Pricing and engagement model are not published. Ask how the internal audit is kept independent of the implementation team.
3. TrazTech (Toronto)
One-line positioning. Toronto ISO 27001 specialist (iso27k.ca) focused on readiness through to Stage 2.
What they do well. TrazTech publishes its ISO 27001 scope and pricing, which few Canadian firms do: scope statement, risk assessment, Statement of Applicability, internal audit and the run-up to Stage 2. Its published estimate for a first certification is 9 to 15 months and CAD $40,000 to $110,000 all-in for year one, with readiness at CAD $25,000 to $70,000.
Best fit for. Buyers who want a single-framework ISO 27001 specialist and value published pricing.
Notable signals. Published CAD pricing, a page on Canadian certification bodies, Toronto office on Church Street.
Caveats. The published timeline is longer than an accelerated program. If a customer deadline sits inside six months, ask whether they can compress it.
4. Elastify (Toronto)
One-line positioning. Toronto compliance-as-a-service firm with productized tiers across SOC 2, ISO 27001 and other frameworks.
What they do well. Elastify packages audit and compliance readiness, compliance automation and vCISO work into Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers, which suits buyers who want predictable pricing.
Best fit for. Canadian SMBs that prefer a tiered service bundle.
Notable signals. King Street West headquarters in Toronto, multi-framework coverage including HIPAA, NIST and GDPR.
Caveats. We could not find an ISO 27001-specific implementation page. Ask which tier includes the ISMS management artifacts (risk assessment, Statement of Applicability, management review) and who runs the internal audit.
5. Carbide (Canadian, platform plus advisory)
One-line positioning. Security and compliance platform with an advisory team, listed in ISMS Directory as a Canadian ISO 27001 consulting provider.
What they do well. Carbide combines software with advisory support across ISO 27001, SOC 2, CPCSC and CMMC, and its team includes ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Lead Auditor credential holders.
Best fit for. Smaller companies that want the platform and the guidance from one vendor.
Notable signals. Canadian defence frameworks (CPCSC, CMMC) alongside ISO 27001.
Caveats. Platform-led advisory tends to scale consultant time with the subscription. Confirm how much senior consultant time comes with the plan, and who runs the internal audit.
6. ISA Cybersecurity (Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa)
One-line positioning. Large Canadian cybersecurity services firm with managed security, MDR and a GRC advisory practice.
What they do well. More than 30 years in the Canadian market, offices in Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa, and a GRC practice that lists ISO 27001 among the frameworks it supports.
Best fit for. Mid-market and enterprise buyers who want one Canadian vendor across managed security and compliance advisory.
Notable signals. National Canadian footprint, in-house security operations.
Caveats. ISA's public pages show ISO 27001 as a supported framework without describing an implementation method. Ask for a named ISO 27001 lead and a sample project plan.
7. BDO Canada (national)
One-line positioning. National accounting and advisory firm offering ISO 27001 readiness alongside SOC reporting.
What they do well. BDO's third-party assurance practice offers SOC reports, readiness assessments and support for ISO 27001:2022 and ISO 42001 alignment, with offices across Canada.
Best fit for. Mid-market companies already working with BDO on audit or tax who want compliance in the same relationship.
Notable signals. National footprint, SOC and ISO work under one practice.
Caveats. Confirm whether the engagement is a readiness assessment or a full ISMS build, and which certification body you would use.
8. Big 4 Canada: Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, EY
One-line positioning. Tier-one firms with enterprise ISO and risk advisory practices.
What they do well. Deep benches, regulator-grade documentation and global consistency for multinationals. PwC Canada is also an SCC-accredited ISO 27001 certification body, and KPMG Canada offers ISO/IEC 27001 certification.
Best fit for. Enterprises, crown corporations and regulated institutions where a Big 4 procurement vehicle already exists.
Notable signals. National practices, full risk advisory, in-house certification capability at some firms.
Caveats. Enterprise pricing rarely suits SMBs. The independence rule applies here too: if a Big 4 firm certifies you, its consulting arm cannot build the same ISMS, so you may end up paying two large firms.
ISO 27001 certification bodies serving Canada (these audit, they do not consult)
An accredited certification body runs the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits and issues the ISO 27001 certificate. In Canada, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredits certification bodies, and certificates accredited by ANAB (US) or UKAS (UK) carry the same international recognition through the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement.
| Certification body | Accreditation for ISO 27001 | Notes |
| MHM Advisory (Calgary) | SCC | Also SCC-accredited for ISO 42001 and ISO 27701 |
| PwC LLP Canada (Vancouver) | SCC | Also accredited for ISO 42001 |
| Schellman | ANAB and UKAS | US-based, serves Canadian clients |
| A-LIGN | ANAB and UKAS | US-based, serves Canadian clients |
| Prescient Security | IAS | US-based; states it does not consult |
You can check any certificate on IAF CertSearch. Your consultant should help you shortlist two or three certification bodies and request quotes; the auditor day count comes from a table in ISO/IEC 27006-1 and scales with headcount.

What does ISO 27001 consulting cost in Canada?
A first ISO 27001 certification for a Canadian SMB typically costs CAD $40,000 to $110,000 in year one, split between consulting, the certification audit and tooling. The ranges below come from published sources; our ISO 27001 cost guide links each one.
ISO 27001 in Canada: year-one budget at SMB scope
Consulting and readiness: about CAD $25,000 to $70,000. Stage 1 and Stage 2 certification audit: about CAD $15,000 to $40,000. Independent internal audit: USD $6,500 to $10,500 in Truvo Cyber engagements. GRC platform licences are separate.
Consulting and implementation. CAD $25,000 to $70,000 for readiness at SMB scope (TrazTech, published). US benchmarks run USD $15,000 to $60,000 to implement an ISMS (BD Emerson, 2026).
Certification audit. Stage 1 plus Stage 2 runs roughly CAD $15,000 to $40,000. The fee equals auditor days multiplied by the day rate, and ISO/IEC 27006-1 sets 5 auditor days for about 10 people and 12 days for about 100.
Internal audit. In Truvo Cyber engagements in 2026, an independent ISO 27001 internal audit for an SMB of up to 100 people was priced at USD $6,500 to $10,500 as a fixed fee.
Surveillance years. Two surveillance audits follow in years two and three, then recertification. Year-two cost drops when the ISMS keeps running between audits and rises when the team has to rebuild evidence before each audit.
Four factors move the ISO 27001 price more than anything else:
- Scope. The number of sites, products and people in the ISMS scope sets both consultant effort and auditor days.
- Existing SOC 2 program. A mature SOC 2 program removes much of the control and evidence work.
- Infrastructure shape. On-prem, colocation and hybrid environments need more consultant time on physical and network controls.
- Deadline. A fixed customer date forces a compressed plan. Fixed-price accelerated programs cost more per month and less in total.
How Truvo approaches ISO 27001 differently
We treat ISO 27001 certification as evidence of a working security program. The first thing we build is the program itself: risk assessment tied to the real stack, a Statement of Applicability that explains each control decision, policies that describe how the team works, and evidence collection wired into the tools the team already uses. ISO 27001 sits on that program, SOC 2 maps onto the same controls, and ISO 42001 follows when AI features ship.
The engagement starts from the certification date. On the first call we name the internal audit date, the management review date and the Stage 1 and Stage 2 windows, then plan backwards. The ISO 27001 Accelerator runs that plan in eight weeks to audit-ready for companies with a deadline, and the Operate phase keeps the ISMS current through surveillance audits.
Independence is built in. Our internal audit team is separate from the implementation team, and we coordinate with accredited certification bodies without being one. For companies that also need SOC 2, our SOC 2 consulting practice in Canada uses the same control set, and the SOC 2 consultants in Canada guide compares that market the same way this page compares ISO 27001.
If you are comparing us with the firms above, the questions that tend to decide it are these: do you need one firm across ISO 27001, SOC 2, ISO 42001 and CPCSC over several years; do you have on-prem or hybrid infrastructure in scope; do you want a Canadian partner with PIPEDA and Law 25 fluency; and do you want a fixed price with a named Stage 2 date. If those match, we are likely a good fit. If they do not, one of the other firms on this list probably is.

Frequently asked questions
How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Canada?
A first ISO 27001 certification typically takes 6 to 12 months from kickoff, or 4 to 6 months with an existing SOC 2 program. Accelerated programs reach audit-ready in about eight weeks, and Stage 1 and Stage 2 follow 4 to 8 weeks later depending on certification body availability. The certificate is valid for three years with annual surveillance audits.
Should I hire the same firm for ISO 27001 and SOC 2?
Yes, for the consulting work. One consultant building one control set for both frameworks avoids duplicate policies and duplicate evidence. The audits stay separate: a CPA firm issues the SOC 2 report and an accredited certification body issues the ISO 27001 certificate, and neither can be the firm that built your controls.
Can we use different auditors for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 and still save time?
Yes. The time savings come from the shared program, not from the auditor. The same access reviews, vendor reviews, change tickets and risk assessment feed both audits. Some firms hold both a CPA licence and ISO accreditation, which can simplify scheduling, but separate auditors work fine with a well-mapped program.
Is an ISO 27001 certificate from a US or UK certification body valid in Canada?
Yes, when the certification body is accredited by an IAF MLA signatory for ISO 27001, such as SCC in Canada, ANAB in the US or UKAS in the UK. Canadian customers generally accept all three. Check the certificate on IAF CertSearch, and confirm the accreditation covers ISO/IEC 27001 specifically.
Does ISO 27001 cover PIPEDA or Quebec Law 25?
Partly. ISO 27001 covers information security controls, and PIPEDA and Law 25 are privacy laws with their own obligations, including consent, privacy impact assessments and breach reporting. ISO 27701 extends the ISMS into privacy and maps more closely to both laws. A Canadian consultant can design the ISMS to cover the shared controls once.
How do I evaluate ISO 27001 consultants?
Ask five questions: will you build our ISMS or audit it; who runs the internal audit and how is it independent; can you quote a fixed price with a named Stage 2 date; which other frameworks will this program support; and how many engagements have you run on infrastructure like ours. Firms that answer all five clearly are worth a proposal.
