Top ISO 42001 Consultants in Canada (2026): A Buyer's Guide

Reviewed by Ali Aleali, CISSP, CCSP · Last reviewed October 23, 2026

Truvo Cyber is a Canadian cybersecurity firm that implements ISO/IEC 42001, the AI management system standard, for SaaS and technology companies shipping AI features: AI system inventory, AI risk and impact assessments, AI governance policies, internal audit, and coordination with an accredited certification body. A first ISO 42001 certification for a small organization runs roughly US$20,000 to US$55,000 in year one, and an existing ISO 27001 program cuts that by 40 to 60 percent. In Canada, the consultant who builds your AI management system cannot be the body that certifies it. This guide sets out how to evaluate an ISO 42001 consultant in Canada and compares eight firms, including us.

ISO 42001 is a young standard and a young consulting market. In October 2026 we found specialist ISO consultancies, Big 4 practices and small firms selling ISO 42001 readiness in Canada, alongside a very short list of certification bodies. Our post on the two Canadian ISO 42001 certification bodies covers the audit side; this guide covers who builds the AI management system.

This page is for the technical leader whose enterprise customers, investors or procurement teams have started asking how the company governs its AI. The first half covers the criteria that predict whether an ISO 42001 engagement produces an AI management system that holds up at Stage 2. The second half compares the firms we could verify. We list ourselves first because leaving ourselves off would be odd, and we describe every other firm as accurately as public information allows.

If you want the standard explained first, see what ISO 42001 is, and the ISO 42001 Readiness Scorecard gives you a benchmark before you scope a vendor.

How to evaluate an ISO 42001 consultant in Canada

The best predictor of a good ISO 42001 engagement is whether the consultant starts with an inventory of your AI systems and how they are used, then builds governance around them. Templated AI policies come a distant second. The seven criteria below separate consultants who deliver a working AI management system from those who deliver a binder.

1. Consultant or certification body: know which one you are talking to

An ISO 42001 consultant builds your AI management system (AIMS). An accredited certification body audits it and issues the certificate. ISO/IEC 17021-1, which every accredited certification body follows, prohibits a certification body from consulting on the management system it certifies. In Canada, the two SCC-listed ISO 42001 certification bodies (MHM Advisory and PwC Canada) offer certification work, not implementation.

Your ISO 42001 consultant and certification body must be different firms

ISO/IEC 17021-1 bars a certification body from consulting on the management system it certifies. Hire a consultant to build the AIMS and an accredited body to certify it.

2. AI system inventory and impact assessment first

ISO 42001 asks you to understand the AI systems you develop, provide or use, assess their risks, and assess their impact on people. A consultant who opens with policy templates skips the part auditors probe hardest. Ask to see a sample AI system inventory and AI impact assessment from a past engagement.

3. Technical depth in how AI is built and deployed

AI governance controls touch model selection, training data, evaluation, monitoring, third-party models and agent permissions. A consultant needs enough engineering depth to talk with your ML and platform teams about how the systems work. Ask who on the team has built or secured AI systems.

4. ISO 27001 and SOC 2 integration

ISO 42001 shares its management system structure with ISO 27001: context, leadership, risk, internal audit, management review and corrective action. A consultant who builds ISO 42001 on an existing ISO 27001 or SOC 2 program avoids duplicate processes. Our post on ISO 42001, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 overlap maps where the work carries over.

ISO 27001 holders reach ISO 42001 faster

ISO 42001 shares the ISO 27001 management system structure. An existing ISMS cuts ISO 42001 cost by 40 to 60 percent because risk management, internal audit and management review already exist.

5. Regulatory context: Canada, the US and the EU

ISO 42001 is voluntary, and the laws around it differ by market. In Canada, the federal Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA) died when Bill C-27 lapsed in January 2025, Ontario's Bill 194 sets AI accountability rules for public sector entities, and Quebec Law 25 requires notice and explanation for decisions based exclusively on automated processing. For the EU, our ISO 42001, NIST AI RMF and EU AI Act crosswalk shows how the frameworks line up. A good consultant designs the AIMS to cover the markets you sell into.

6. Independent internal audit

Every ISO 42001 AIMS needs an internal audit before Stage 2, and the internal auditor must be independent of the people who built the system. Ask whether the consultant runs ISO 42001 internal audits through a separate team or names a partner.

7. Fixed price and a named Stage 2 window

A consultant who knows how long ISO 42001 takes can quote a fixed price and a fixed calendar. Because Canada has very few accredited certification bodies, ask the consultant to check certification body availability before committing to a Stage 2 date.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 42001 consulting in Canada

How much does an ISO 42001 consultant cost in Canada?

A first ISO 42001 certification for a small organization runs roughly US$20,000 to US$55,000 in year one, covering gap assessment, implementation and the accredited audit, and a mid-size company can pay US$85,000 to US$150,000. An existing ISO 27001 program cuts the cost by 40 to 60 percent. See our ISO 42001 cost guide.

Should I hire the same firm for ISO 42001 and my SOC 2 or ISO 27001?

Yes, for the consulting work. One consultant building one management system and one control set avoids duplicate risk processes, policies and internal audits. The audits stay separate: the certification body that issues your ISO 42001 certificate cannot be the firm that built your AIMS.

Can a vCISO help implement ISO 42001?

Yes. A vCISO or fractional security team that already runs your ISO 27001 or SOC 2 program can extend it to ISO 42001: AI system inventory, AI risk and impact assessments, governance policies and management review. Confirm the team includes someone with hands-on AI engineering or AI security experience.

Top ISO 42001 consulting firms in Canada

The list below covers eight firms with a public ISO 42001 implementation or readiness offering in Canada, checked against each firm's own website in October 2026. ISO 42001 certification bodies serving Canada (these audit, they do not consult)

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is the only Canadian accreditation body for ISO 42001, and certification bodies must also be accredited to ISO/IEC 17021-1. Certificates accredited by ANAB (US) or UKAS (UK) carry international recognition as well.

Certification body Accreditation for ISO 42001 Notes
MHM Advisory (Calgary) SCC First SCC-accredited ISO 42001 body (September 2025)
PwC LLP Canada (Vancouver) SCC, granted with conditions SCC's scope notes the ISO 42001 accreditation is pending verification
Schellman ANAB First ANAB-accredited ISO 42001 body (2024)
BSI UKAS First UKAS ISO 42001 accreditation (January 2026)

Two Canadian options means scheduling matters. Ask your consultant to request certification body availability early, and read our post on Canadian ISO 42001 auditors for when a US or UK body makes sense.

What does ISO 42001 cost in Canada?

A first ISO 42001 certification for a small organization runs roughly US$20,000 to US$55,000 in year one, and a mid-size company can pay US$85,000 to US$150,000. Ongoing surveillance audits and program upkeep run roughly US$10,000 to US$25,000 a year. Our ISO 42001 cost guide breaks down the drivers.

ISO 42001 year-one budget

Small organization: roughly US$20,000 to US$55,000. Mid-size: roughly US$85,000 to US$150,000. Ongoing: roughly US$10,000 to US$25,000 a year.

Four factors move the ISO 42001 price more than anything else:

  • Existing ISO 27001 or SOC 2 program. Risk management, internal audit, management review and document control already exist, which cuts cost by 40 to 60 percent.
  • Number and type of AI systems. Each AI system in scope needs inventory, risk assessment and impact assessment.
  • Your role. Developing and providing AI systems brings more Annex A controls into play than only using them.
  • Certification body availability. With few accredited bodies, a fixed deadline may push you to a US or UK body.

How Truvo approaches ISO 42001 differently

We treat ISO 42001 as AI governance that has to match how your systems work. The first thing we build is the AI system inventory: which models, which data, which agents, which third-party AI services, and who owns each. Risk and impact assessments follow from that inventory, and policies describe the controls your engineers run. ISO 42001 then sits on the same management system as ISO 27001 and SOC 2.

We bring security architecture to the AI work. Our team covers agentic AI security, model and data access controls, and monitoring and incident response for AI systems. Auditors and enterprise customers ask their hardest questions about these areas. The ISO 42001 Accelerator runs the plan in 12 weeks on a fixed price, and our internal audit team checks the AIMS before Stage 2.

If you are comparing us with the firms above, the questions that tend to decide it are these: do you need one firm across ISO 42001, ISO 27001 and SOC 2; do you need governance that reflects how your AI systems and agents are built; do you want a Canadian partner who knows Law 25 and PIPEDA; and do you want a fixed price with a named Stage 2 window. If those match, we are likely a good fit. If they do not, one of the other firms on this list probably is. Our SOC 2 consultants in Canada guide compares the neighbouring market the same way.

Frequently asked questions

What is ISO 42001?

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the international standard for an AI management system (AIMS). It sets requirements for governing how an organization develops, provides or uses AI systems, including AI risk assessment, AI impact assessment, policies, roles, monitoring and continual improvement, and it can be certified by an accredited certification body.

How long does ISO 42001 certification take?

A focused ISO 42001 implementation typically takes about three months to certification-ready, longer for organizations with many AI systems or no existing ISO 27001 program. Stage 1 and Stage 2 follow, depending on certification body availability, which is limited in Canada.

Who can certify ISO 42001 in Canada?

As of October 2026, SCC lists two certification bodies for ISO 42001 in Canada: MHM Advisory in Calgary, and PwC LLP Canada, whose accreditation is granted with conditions pending SCC verification. ANAB-accredited and UKAS-accredited bodies, such as Schellman and BSI, also certify Canadian companies.

Does ISO 42001 help with the EU AI Act?

Partly. ISO 42001 gives you a management system for AI risk, documentation and oversight, which supports many EU AI Act obligations. It is not an EU harmonised standard under the AI Act, so certification alone does not create a presumption of conformity. Map your AI systems to the Act's risk categories separately.

Is ISO 42001 required in Canada?

No. ISO 42001 is voluntary. Canada's federal AI bill, AIDA, lapsed with Bill C-27 in January 2025. Ontario's Bill 194 sets AI rules for public sector entities, and Quebec Law 25 covers automated decisions about individuals. Customers and procurement teams are the most common reason companies certify.

Do I need ISO 27001 before ISO 42001?

No, but it helps. ISO 42001 and ISO 27001 share the same management system structure, so an existing ISMS gives you risk management, internal audit, management review and document control. Companies with ISO 27001 typically cut ISO 42001 cost by 40 to 60 percent.
