SOC 2 Compliance Services in Canada (2026): Audit Firms, GRC Platforms and Consultants

Reviewed by Ali Aleali, CISSP, CCSP · Last reviewed October 4, 2026

Bottom line: Every SOC 2 report needs an independent CPA audit firm. Many companies also choose a GRC platform to automate evidence and a consultancy to build and operate the program. The best choice for each depends on your infrastructure and your organization's needs.

What drives SOC 2 compliance in Canada

Canadian companies usually pursue SOC 2 because a customer asks for it. Check each of these with any provider you shortlist:

  • Customer security reviews: enterprise and US customers often ask for a SOC 2 report before they sign or renew. A Type II report answers most security questionnaires in one document.
  • Bank and insurer customers: federally regulated financial institutions pass OSFI Guideline B-10 (third-party risk management) and Guideline B-13 (technology and cyber risk management) expectations to their vendors through contracts. Scope your SOC 2 program with those expectations in view.
  • PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25: if you handle personal information about Canadians, PIPEDA applies, and Law 25 applies for Quebec residents. SOC 2 and these privacy laws overlap in access control, data handling, breach notification and retention, so plan both in one program.
  • Data residency: Canadian enterprise buyers often ask where data is stored. Answer it in your architecture and in your SOC 2 scope statement.
  • French-language documentation: companies serving Quebec may need policies and evidence in French as well as English.
  • On-prem and hybrid infrastructure: fintech, insurance technology and government suppliers in Canada often run outside a hyperscaler. Ask each provider how many engagements they have delivered on infrastructure like yours. See SOC 2 for bare-metal and on-prem infrastructure.

What SOC 2 compliance services include

SOC 2 compliance services in Canada come from three kinds of provider, and each one does a different job.

Provider What they do Typical cost Example firms
Audit firm (required) Tests your controls and issues the SOC 2 report Type I from about CAD $5,000; Type II from about CAD $7,500 Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC; BDO, Grant Thornton, MNP, Richter, RSM; MHM Professional Corporation, Prescient Assurance
GRC platform (optional) Automates evidence collection, policy tracking and control monitoring CAD $5,000 to $25,000 per year Cocoon, Drata, Mycroft.io, Scrut, Secureframe, Sprinto, Vanta
Consultancy (optional) Scopes the audit, designs controls, writes policies, configures the platform, manages the auditor Build engagements typically CAD $20,000 to $50,000 Truvo Cyber

Key insight

Every SOC 2 report needs an audit firm; the platform and consultant depend on your team

A company with an experienced security lead may only need the audit firm and a GRC platform. A company without one usually adds a consultancy to scope, build and operate the SOC 2 program.

How we chose the providers on this page

The providers on this page are firms with a public SOC 2 practice that serves Canadian companies. They are grouped by type and listed alphabetically within each group, with no ranking. Prices are typical ranges from public sources and our own engagements, and each firm quotes its own scope. Truvo is a SOC 2 consultancy in this market; we say so wherever Truvo appears.

SOC 2 audit firms in Canada

A SOC 2 report is an attestation issued by a licensed CPA firm against the AICPA Trust Services Criteria. Canadian companies typically shortlist audit firms from three groups:

  • Big 4 (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC): suited to enterprises that run SOC 2 alongside SOX, financial audit or a large transformation program
  • Mid-tier firms (BDO, Grant Thornton, MNP, Richter, RSM): suited to mid-market companies that want a regional partner relationship
  • Specialist SOC and ISO audit firms (MHM Professional Corporation, Prescient Assurance): focused on cyber and privacy attestation, often a good fit for SaaS scope

Watch out

The SOC 2 audit firm and the readiness consultant must be separate firms

Under the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct, the CPA firm that issues your SOC 2 report must stay independent of whoever designs your controls. A firm that offers both readiness and the audit is a red flag.

Audit cost: Type I audits start at around CAD $5,000 and Type II audits at around CAD $7,500. Multi-category or multi-system scopes cost more, and Big 4 fees are typically higher.

GRC platforms for SOC 2

A GRC platform is software that connects to your cloud, identity provider, ticketing system and HR system, collects evidence on a schedule and maps it to SOC 2 controls. Common choices are Cocoon, Drata, Mycroft.io, Scrut, Secureframe, Sprinto and Vanta.

What a GRC platform does well:

  • Turns evidence collection into a continuous process
  • Tracks policy acceptance and control status in one dashboard
  • Produces evidence in the format auditors expect

The right platform depends on your infrastructure, your existing tools and how much work you want the platform to do. A GRC platform typically costs CAD $5,000 to $25,000 per year at SMB scale. For where the platform's job ends and the consultant's begins, see compliance consulting versus GRC platform.

Four types of SOC 2 consultancy and when each fits

SOC 2 consultancies fall into four types. Each type suits a different kind of engagement.

Consultancy type Strengths Best fit
Platform-led shops Fast, template-driven, deep knowledge of one GRC platform Cloud-native SaaS with simple scope and a first Type I
Big consulting firms Deep benches, regulator-grade documentation Enterprises and regulated industries with SOC 2 inside a larger program
Generalist MSSPs SOC 2 readiness next to managed security operations Companies that already buy security operations from the MSSP
Expertise-led consultancies Senior practitioners, platform-agnostic, multi-framework Hybrid or on-prem infrastructure, several frameworks, deals that depend on enterprise security reviews

Can one vendor handle SOC 2 end to end?

Under AICPA independence rules, the CPA firm that issues your SOC 2 report cannot also design your controls. End-to-end support combines three parts:

  • A consultancy that assesses, builds and operates the program
  • A GRC platform, such as Vanta, Drata or Secureframe, that automates evidence
  • An independent CPA firm, such as Prescient Assurance or MHM Professional Corporation, that issues the report

The closest thing to one vendor is a consultancy that manages all three, which is how Truvo delivers its SOC 2 compliance services. A firm that offers both readiness and the audit is a red flag.

What SOC 2 compliance costs in Canada

First-year SOC 2 cost is the sum of the parts you choose:

Cost item Typical range
Readiness assessment Free to CAD $15,000, depending on depth
Consultant Build engagement CAD $20,000 to $50,000
GRC platform CAD $5,000 to $25,000 per year
Type I audit From about CAD $5,000
Type II audit From about CAD $7,500
Penetration test (commonly expected by auditors and buyers) Scoped separately

Multi-framework programs, hybrid infrastructure and enterprise scope move each line up. For a line-by-line breakdown, see the SOC 2 cost and timeline guide.

How long SOC 2 takes

A well-run SOC 2 engagement typically reaches audit-ready in 8 to 12 weeks. A Type I audit then takes about 2 to 4 weeks. A Type II needs an observation window, usually 3 to 12 months, and many enterprise buyers expect at least six. The auditor then needs about 2 to 4 weeks to issue the report.

How to choose a SOC 2 provider

Ask every SOC 2 provider on your shortlist these six questions:

  1. Who leads the work? Meet the person who will run your engagement, before you sign.
  2. Which frameworks do you deliver besides SOC 2? ISO 27001, PIPEDA and Law 25 often follow within a year.
  3. How many engagements have you delivered on infrastructure like ours? This matters most for hybrid and on-prem stacks.
  4. Which GRC platforms do you work with? A provider that works across several platforms can recommend the one that fits your stack.
  5. Which audit firms do you work with, and can we speak to one? Strong consultants have working relationships with several firms.
  6. What is the price range, and what is fixed? Ask for a range on the first call and a fixed quote after scoping.

Where Truvo fits

Truvo is an expertise-led consultancy. It fits companies with hybrid or on-prem infrastructure, several frameworks in scope, or deals that depend on passing enterprise security reviews. Every engagement is led by a CISSP, follows Assess, Build, Operate at a fixed price, and works with the GRC platform and audit firm that fit your stack.

A platform-led shop is often the faster and cheaper choice for a simple cloud-native first Type I. For how Truvo works, see SOC 2 consultants in Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a SOC 2 consultant if I already have a GRC platform?

It depends on your team. A GRC platform tracks evidence it can read through its integrations. A consultant designs the controls, assigns owners, covers systems outside the platform's reach and manages the auditor. Companies with an experienced security lead often manage with the platform alone; companies without one usually add a consultant.

What is the difference between a SOC 2 consultant and a SOC 2 auditor?

A SOC 2 auditor is a licensed CPA firm that tests your controls and issues the report. A SOC 2 consultant scopes the audit, designs the controls, writes the policies, configures the GRC platform and prepares you for the audit. AICPA independence rules keep the two roles in separate firms, and the consultant usually manages the auditor relationship for you.

How much do SOC 2 compliance services cost in Canada?

First-year cost is the sum of the parts you choose. Type I audits start at around CAD $5,000 and Type II audits at around CAD $7,500. A GRC platform typically costs CAD $5,000 to $25,000 per year. A consultant Build engagement typically costs CAD $20,000 to $50,000. Scope, frameworks and infrastructure move each figure.

Can a Canadian CPA firm do both SOC 2 readiness and the audit?

A CPA firm audits only controls that someone else designed. Some large firms offer advisory and attestation through separate arms with different partners; confirm in the engagement letter who signs the audit and who leads the readiness work. The simplest setup keeps the readiness consultant and the audit firm in different companies.

What are the top vendors that offer end-to-end SOC 2 support from initial assessment to audit?

Under AICPA independence rules, the CPA firm that issues your SOC 2 report cannot also design your controls. End-to-end support combines three parts: a consultancy that assesses, builds and operates the program; a GRC platform, such as Vanta, Drata or Secureframe, that automates evidence; and an independent CPA firm, such as Prescient Assurance or MHM Professional Corporation, that issues the report. The closest thing to one vendor is a consultancy that manages all three, which is how Truvo delivers its SOC 2 compliance services. A firm that offers both readiness and the audit is a red flag.

How should you compare two SOC 2 consulting firms against each other?

Compare the type of firm before the features. Canadian SOC 2 consultancies fall into four types: platform-led shops (fast, template-driven, tied to one GRC platform); big consulting firms (deep benches, enterprise pricing); generalist MSSPs (SOC 2 as a line item next to managed security); and expertise-led consultancies (senior practitioners, platform-agnostic, multi-framework). Each type suits a different kind of engagement. Once the type fits your scope, compare: engagement model (Assess, Build, Operate, or all three); frameworks beyond SOC 2; fit for hybrid or on-prem infrastructure; GRC platform independence; audit firm partnerships; and pricing (ask for a price range on the first call).

Is SOC 2 a certification in Canada?

SOC 2 is an attestation report issued by a licensed CPA firm under AICPA standards, and many buyers call it a SOC 2 certification. Canadian companies receive the same SOC 2 report as US companies, from Canadian or US audit firms. A Type I report covers control design at a point in time; a Type II report covers how controls operated over a period, usually 3 to 12 months.

Do I need a SOC 2 firm in my city, such as Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary?

SOC 2 consulting and audits are usually delivered remotely, so firms across Canada and the US serve companies in every city. Choose on infrastructure, frameworks and auditor relationships. A local or travelling provider helps when you run physical facilities, such as a data centre or colocation cage, that need an on-site walkthrough.

Which firms are best for a SOC 2 gap analysis?

A SOC 2 gap analysis comes from a consultancy, and it should come from a firm other than your auditor. Look for a gap analysis that maps your systems to the Trust Services Criteria, defines your audit scope and ends with a prioritized remediation roadmap. Many consultancies, Truvo included, offer a free readiness assessment as the first step.

Should a Canadian company hire a Canadian or a US SOC 2 consultant?

Choose on fit with your infrastructure, regulations and customers. Canadian consultants are more likely to know PIPEDA, Law 25 and OSFI expectations and to offer French-language documentation. US and Canadian firms both serve clients across the border, and both include firms with on-prem experience.

What does PIPEDA or Law 25 require that SOC 2 leaves out?

SOC 2 is a security and trust attestation; PIPEDA and Law 25 are Canadian privacy laws. The privacy laws add consent, breach notification timelines, individual access and deletion rights, and, under Law 25, transparency about automated decisions. Access control, data handling and retention controls serve both, so a Canadian program can cover SOC 2 and privacy in one build.
